Powder Metallurgy is a Green Technology

Powder metallurgy is the blending of fine powdered materials and then pressing them into the shapes or forms (compacting) that you need for your project and then heating the compressed material in a controlled setting to bond the material (sintering to the metal).

The powder metallurgy has four steps: powder manufacturing, powder blending, compacting and then sintering.

Compacting is done at room temperature, and the elevated-temperature process of sintering is usually conducted at atmospheric pressure. There is also an optional secondary process that often follows to obtain unique properties or enhanced precision.

The powered metallurgy process is very efficient with the highest raw material utilization (over 95%) and the lowest energy requirement per weight of finished part compared with other manufacturing processes. It is suitable for large volume production with very little waste.

The high-precision forming capability of powered metallurgy produces components with near-net shape and good dimensional precision pieces. The unique flexibility of the PM process enables products to be made from materials that are tailored to users’ specific needs. By using specially selected materials, this capability enables refinements to be engineered into the mechanical properties of the part.

Powder metallurgy is a continually and rapidly evolving technology embracing most metallic and alloy materials, and a wide variety of types of projects. It is a highly developed method of manufacturing reliable ferrous and non-ferrous parts. Most of powder metallurgy products are used in the auto and transportation market.

Powder metallurgy parts are used in many types of products including, hardware components, automobile parts, power tools, postage meters, knives, oil & gas drilling well-head components and more.

Powder metallurgy provides many advantages over other metal working technologies because powder metallurgy is very cost effective, has a great deal of flexibility and has a high part-to-part-uniformity.
